Can dogs drink milk?

Caution

A little is usually fine, but many dogs can't digest it well.

Lots of dogs are somewhat lactose intolerant, so milk can cause gas and diarrhea.

My dog ate milk. What do I do?

  1. Skip it if your dog gets an upset stomach.
  2. If you're not sure how much they ate, call your vet and describe it.

How to share milk safely

A few laps at most. Plain unsweetened yogurt or lactose-free milk is easier on most dogs.

Why?

Puppies can digest milk, but many adult dogs make less of the enzyme that breaks down lactose.
