Can dogs eat grapes?

Toxic

No. Grapes can cause kidney failure in dogs.

There's no known safe amount, and some dogs get sick from just a few. Raisins, currants and grape juice count too.

Last reviewed September 2026. Based on the veterinary sources listed below. Every dog is different, so call your vet if you're unsure.

My dog ate grapes. What do I do?

  1. Call your vet or a pet poison line now, even if your dog seems fine.
  2. Tell them your dog's weight, how much they ate and roughly when.
  3. Don't make your dog throw up unless a vet tells you to.

Signs to watch for: Vomiting, diarrhea, low energy, not eating, and drinking or peeing much more or less than normal, usually within 24 hours.

Why?

The ASPCA's poison control team now believes tartaric acid, which grapes are full of, is what damages a dog's kidneys. Dogs react very differently, so a handful that didn't bother one dog can seriously hurt another. That's why vets treat any amount as an emergency.
